Why I'm Running

“Leave things (and people) better than you found them.” Though my parents never spoke this out loud, they lived it and passed it on to their children. I have tried to emulate this during the thirty-six years we have lived in West Bountiful. This edict is one of the key factors in my decision to run for City Council. I want to help preserve West Bountiful for future generations, not just the three generations of my family that currently reside here. We raised our five children here, and four of our seven grandchildren are thriving in this close-knit community.  I was also strongly cautioned in my youth that “if it’s not broke, DON”T fix it!” I am not running for City Council because I think something is broken in the city, and I am just the person to fix it.  I also do not have a personal agenda.  I respect the work done by the current administration to get the city to where it stands today.  I only hope to bring a new and fresh perspective and a listening ear. I believe my diverse work and personal experience qualify me to serve the citizens of West Bountiful.

About Me

I was raised and educated in Roy and Ogden, Utah, where I graduated from Weber State’s Respiratory Therapy program in the School of Allied Sciences.  I was employed at the University Medical Center where I worked in all areas of critical care, trauma, Airmed, and the Sleep Disorders Center.

In 1985, I married Scott Thompson.  While I spent my youth in one community, his family moved frequently.  He was envious of my lifelong friendships and my family’s deep community connection.  When we moved to West Bountiful in 1989, we knew we had found the perfect place for our family to put down the roots he had longed for as a child.

We love to travel and spend time with family and friends.  I am always ready for the next adventure.  If you can’t find me, the best place to look is in the backyard pool, where I am likely swimming with my grandchildren.

Professional Experience

In 1998, Scott and I left our careers to run the local Dairy Queen so my parents could retire.  We thought we might stay for a few years before returning to our previous professions.  Well, a “few” turned into twenty-five years and the opening of a second location.  During this time, we sponsored school and community events and gave hundreds of teens their first job, teaching them a strong work ethic, accountability, and leadership. We provided a nurturing space for adults returning to the workforce or going through transitional periods of life.

Since selling our last DQ in 2023, I have worked as an administrative assistant, bookkeeper, and even a Lyft driver. During the school year, I substitute teach part-time in Davis School District.

Though I have never run for public office before or served on a committee in West Bountiful, I first began seriously considering public service when I was appointed by the Davis County Commission in 2016 to serve on the Tourism Taxation Advisory Board (TTAB). From 2016-2023, when we sold our business, I was a voting member of the board, working with other business owners, commissioners, and professionals as we made recommendations to the County Commission about how to spend the money generated by the 1% tax collected from restaurants, hotels, and tourism related businesses.  We developed a scoring criteria that was used as we reviewed grant applications for this funding. We weighed in on potential and current tax funded projects, monitored tourism spending trends, studied budgets, and set goals.  When my time on this largely invisible board came to an end, I longed to contribute to the community in a meaningful way.  This experience moved the thought of public service from the back of my mind to the forefront and gave me confidence to file as a candidate.

Volunteer Work

We have volunteered our time coaching baseball, t-ball, and soccer in West Bountiful. I served as PTA President at West Bountiful Elementary twice.  I currently volunteer on a small committee that has been given the green light by the State of Utah to create the first hospice in the Utah prison system. I also serve as a vice-president on the Executive Board of the International Society Daughters of Utah Pioneers. A great privilege in my life is to research and write stories of Utah Pioneers for an annual book published by Daughters of Utah Pioneers.

My faith and my family are my first priorities.  I have served in many leadership positions in my church.  However, my favorite place is in the trenches, serving and connecting with people individually.

Why Should You Vote for Me?

Over the years, I have developed deep connections in this community with people from all walks of life. I have experience as an employer and employee, leader and follower, as well as a giver and recipient of acts of service.  My professional, volunteer, and personal experiences have given me the temperament to work with any personality type, have both pleasant and difficult conversations, and make decisions that are best for the community without bowing to social pressure. I believe that my skillset, open-mindedness, and integrity give me the ability to listen to and represent all members of this rich and diverse community.  I pledge to give a voice to those who may have been hesitant to express their opinions or speak out. I would be honored to earn your vote.
